Cooking and Eating
Nowadays the kitchen is the hub of the home so it is important to ensure that this area is warm, cosy and spacious and includes eating and relaxing areas where possible. I like to use natural materials – flagstone floors of local stone, natural stone surfaces, bespoke ironmongery – and colours that complement the surrounding countryside.
Bathing
A large beautiful bathtub is a must – where space allows – in order to relax and unwind with a book and a glass of wine. In my view, bathrooms should be an extension of the style of the house and every bathroom should be unique. I like to use natural materials of stone and wood and more recently I have been using waterproof plaster or Tadelakt in place of tiles.
Relaxing
When we have time to relax, it is important to have a space which is warm and comfortable, whether this is a ‘snug like’ family space or a formal drawing room. An open fire or log burner helps to create warmth and atmosphere, whilst the furniture and soft furnishings create the required comfort. I love mixing textures and tones in either a neutral palette or a colourful one and working with sumptuous and soft natural fabrics.
Slumbering
We all love to laze around in bed occasionally, so a bedroom needs to be warm, comfortable, sumptuous and individual – reflecting the style and personality of the slumberer. Fabrics should be soft and scrumptious – I love using linens, velvets, wools and furs to give texture and character to each bedroom. Colours are a very personal choice and should reflect the feel of the home – either light and fresh or dark and moody.
Other spaces
All other spaces in a home – entrance halls, studies, swimming pools, gyms, cinema rooms, bars, party spaces, loggias and boot rooms – need to blend with the main style of the house and require the same level of attention and design.
Each project is unique and reflects the quality of their workmanship and achieves the desired result of creating the perfect home.
